Current Opportunities
Funding organiser
Location: Manchester | Volunteer
Main responsibilities - to apply for and secure funding for the event each year. This is something Bob from Envirolution has always taken the lead on and he is happy to provide support and training on this, as well as share all of our past funding applications and contacts. Funders are very supportive of our cause and will usually help if they can. A lot of the hard work is already done here and there is an element of updating and amending what has worked previously.
This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to know about how to apply for funding for the kind of projects and events that funders are looking for. As this is already a group that has pulled in more funding as the project has progressed, there is now scope for the group to be able to apply for larger funding pots which could also cover staff time for these roles (as long as the group remains not for profit and sticks to its environmentally minded ethical stance).
All funding for Envirolution is usually applied for before Christmas each year with a view of having confirmation around the Christmas period.
Social media coordinator
Location: Manchester | Volunteer
Main responsibilities are to keep on top of EnvirolutionUK social media channels (currently Facebook - 2800 followers, Twitter - 1500 followers and Instagram – almost 1000 followers). These are already well established, and so this provides a great opportunity by giving a head start for someone who is wanting to work in this field. The previous Envirolution social media coordinators has gone on to work for a successful media organisation in Amsterdam. He should be able to help give pointers about boosting content and other tips for the new coordinator.
The role involves occasional yet regular media posts throughout the year to remind people of events gone by, events coming up and big news in the environmental education and sustainability sector. Social media posts intensify in the lead up to the main event each year and can include acts, performers, speakers, workshop providers or any other groups or individuals who get involved in the Envirolution festival. Then on the day, the social media coordinator can work with the event film maker and photographer to provide ongoing content on the social media channels throughout and after the event.
Main Event planner
Location: Manchester | Volunteer
Main responsibilities of the main event team are to action, delegate or complete key tasks throughout the event planning period and be liaison for the area coordinators.
This involves booking key infrastructure for the event in good time (shelters, first aid, solar power provider, toilets, security, music stage manager, wellbeing area provider, food stalls provider, recycling and waste management). This is usually done as early as possible in the event planning, before Christmas. Envirolution has long standing working relationships with all of these providers so this is a relatively simple task.
The event planners also are the main points of contact for the area coordinators or external providers. The Wellbeing area, Food stalls and Music line ups are all outsourced but they will need to be given the right information and deadlines and any other support they may need.
On the event day, the event coordinators make sure to be the first on site, and first point of contact for people arriving to set up shelters, run areas, provide activities, etc and be able to point them in the right direction to their area coordinator or where they need to set up. During the event the coordinators will take turns to stay at the event Welcome area as a central point of contact or walk around and ensure each area is running smoothly.
This role could involve a lot of dot connecting, but previous event coordinators can provide a good handover period and ongoing support if needed to anyone coming into this role. This is perfect for anyone wanting to go into event management roles and can provide unique hands on experience of running large scale public engagement or climate change education and awareness events.
Volunteer coordinator
Location: Manchester | Volunteer
This role involves contacting Envirolution’s existing links for event day volunteers, such as the Universities, providing them with information about the event so they can recruit people. The earlier this is advertised the better to ensure that the festival has enough volunteers on the day. The volunteer coordinator should make sure that all volunteers have been given a volunteer briefing (documentation for this has already been created by Envirolution) so they know exactly what their role is, when they will get a break and when they will rotate activities and anything else that is necessary on the day. Previous volunteer coordinators can provide training on this role so any new volunteer coordinator is confident with what they are doing. This is the perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to gain experience working in volunteer or team management and event management.
Usually the Envirolution event has around 50 volunteers spread over three time periods:
07:00 – 12:30 : Build crew
The volunteer coordinator usually meet volunteers at the Welcome Area (which is the shelter put up first before 07:00 on the day). Volunteers are then given a high vis jacket or Envirolution T-Shirt and sent to the areas they are needed the most at this time. This usually entails helping load materials into vehicles at the unit to be distributed around the park and then put up shelters or help with event décor.
12:00 – 19:00 : Event volunteers
One or two event volunteers are sent to each area as helpers for the area coordinators, and one or two kept back in the welcome area to help there. Other volunteers are shown how to run each of the games and creative area activities. These roles are regularly rotated so all volunteers get a good experience of the range of activities going on at Envirolution. Tey also all get a free lunch and refreshments which are available for all at the welcome area where all volunteers keep any belongings.
18:30 – 21:00 : Take down crew
These volunteers are key to a successful event! Each of the areas needs to be taken down, loaded into vehicles and delivered back to the unit. The more volunteers we have to help take down each of the shelters, décor and any other infrastructure in the different areas, the earlier everyone can go to the afterparty to celebrate a job well done. They may even get a free drink on Envirolution!
